हम सभी जानते है की हमारा देश हिंदुस्तान पूरे विश्व में अपनी अलग रीती रिवाज़ तथा संस्कृति के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। भारत में प्राचीन काल से ही यह परंपरा रही है की यहाँ महिलाओं को समाज में विशिष्ट आदर एवं सम्मान दिया जाता है। भारत वह देश है जहाँ महिलाओं की सुरक्षा और इज्ज़त का खास ख्याल रखा जाता है। भारतीय संस्कृति में महिलाओं को देवी लक्ष्मी का दर्जा दिया गया है। अगर हम इक्कीसवीं सदी की बात करे तो महिलाएं हर कार्यक्षेत्र में पुरुषों के साथ कंधे से कंधा मिला काम कर रही है चाहे वो राजनीति, बैंक, विद्यालय, खेल, पुलिस, रक्षा क्षेत्र, खुद का कारोबार हो या आसमान में उड़ने की अभिलाषा हो।
हम यह तो नही कह सकते की हमारे देश में महिला सुरक्षा को लेकर कोई मुद्दा नहीं है परन्तु हम कुछ सकारात्मक बिंदुओ को अनदेखा भी नहीं कर सकते। अगर हम अपने इतिहास पर नज़र डाले तो हम देखते है की उस ज़माने में पांचाली प्रथा होती थी जिसके तहत एक महिला (द्रौपदी) को पाँच पुरुषों (पांडव) से विवाह करने की अनुमति दी गई थी। ये तो वो तथ्य है जो हम सब जानते है परंतु अगर पर्दे के पीछे की बात की जाये तो दफ्तरों, घरों, सड़को आदि पर महिलाओं पर किये गए अत्याचारों से अनजान है। पिछले कुछ समय में ही महिलाओं पर तेज़ाब फेंकना, बलात्कार, यौन उत्पीड़न जैसी वारदातों में एकाएक वृद्धि आई है। इन घटनाओं को देखने के बाद तो लगता है की महिलाओं की सुरक्षा खतरे में है।
